Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to answer charges related to alleged money laundering and corruption involving N80.2 billion. This marks a significant moment as Bello had previously evaded multiple EFCC invitations and arrest warrants.
Grassroots Parrot have gathered that Bello’s appearance followed negotiations between his camp and that of President Bola Tinubu, as the president seeks to underscore his administration’s commitment to fighting corruption. Bello was accompanied by several top politicians and APC leaders, signaling the high stakes of the situation.
Bello’s media office confirmed that his decision to honor the EFCC’s invitation came after consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies. His office stressed that he has “nothing to hide” and is a “respecter of the rule of law.”

Previously, Bello had resisted arrest, with a dramatic scene unfolding at his Abuja residence when EFCC operatives attempted to apprehend him. His successor, Governor Usman Ododo, intervened to block the arrest.
Bello is facing a 19-count charge of money laundering, with his trial scheduled to continue on September 25. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede personally invited Bello for interrogation, signaling the agency’s determination to prosecute the former governor.
Despite Bello’s cooperation, sources have reported mounting pressure on the EFCC to release him after the interrogation. The former governor had reportedly been hiding in the Kogi State House and the state’s liaison office in Abuja to evade arrest.

The EFCC accuses Bello of diverting N80.2 billion of Kogi State funds during his tenure as governor. The charges, filed in March 2024, include allegations of criminal breach of trust and money laundering. One specific accusation involves using associates to launder N950 million for the purchase of a property in the Maitama District of Abuja.
Bello’s appearance before the EFCC comes after the Court of Appeal in Abuja ordered him to present himself for arraignment. The court also set aside a previous judgment from the Kogi State High Court that had delayed the proceedings.
As the investigation continues, political negotiations and pressure on the EFCC are likely to shape the next steps in this high-profile case.
