The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has disagreed with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the collation and public sharing of election results ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Read also: Nigeria Confirms Ebola Case in Abuja, Begins Contact Tracing of 44 People

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, on Tuesday warned media organisations to resist declaring privately collated results in the 2027 polls.

Giving the warning in Abuja at a national stakeholders’ meeting convened to mark 100 days to the 2027 general election, Amupitan stated that under the electoral act, the authority to declare results rests exclusively with the commission

In reaction, ADC said it would independently document, collate and share polling-unit results with the public, despite INEC Chairman’s warning against the sharing of privately collated results.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Wednesday, the ADC argued that collecting and sharing election results independently is a constitutional right.

Read also: Workers Shut Education Ministry Gates, Block Alausa From Office

The Party said its position was based on its understanding of the constitutional provisions on freedom of expression, adding that the limitations attached to those rights did not prevent citizens and political parties from collecting and sharing election information.

“We are aware of our rights to freedom of expression under the Constitution. We are also aware of the limitations associated with those rights. And we hold that our rights to collate and share election results are not abrogated by any of the limitation clauses,” the ADC said.

The Party explained that its agents would document results at polling units, while its structures would collate the figures before making verified results available to the public.

“The ADC will share our collated results with the public. Our agents will document results, our structures will collate them, and we will communicate verified figures to the public, clearly identifying their source and status,” it said.

The ADC, however, acknowledged INEC’s statutory responsibility to collate and officially declare election results and announce winners.

The Party’s position sets up a clear difference between its planned approach to privately collated results and INEC’s position on the publication of independently collated figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
