Foundation Laid For New School In Kano Community Six Months After Grassroots Parrot Report

Six months after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State issued a directive for the immediate construction of a school in Gishiri Wuya—a long-neglected community in Katarkawa Ward, Warawa Local Government Area—the foundation stone for a new primary and junior secondary school was officially laid on Thursday, marking a milestone in the community’s history.

The initiative follows a special investigative report by Grassroots Parrot in November last year, which brought to light the severe educational deprivation suffered by residents of Gishiri Wuya.

The report revealed that generations of children in the area had been denied access to formal education due to the complete absence of school infrastructure.

Moved by the report and the community’s passionate appeals, Governor Yusuf promptly ordered the construction of a modern school facility to bridge the educational gap and provide long-awaited relief to families in the area.

On Thursday, the groundbreaking ceremony was led by the Chairman of Warawa Local Government, Hon. Lamido Sanusi Garin Dau, accompanied by local council members and traditional leaders.

Addressing community members during the event, the Chairman confirmed that all necessary materials had been procured and that construction would begin without further delay.

“This school is not just a building—it is a symbol of a new beginning for Gishiri Wuya. I urge every parent here to enroll their children once it is completed. The government is committed to ensuring every child has access to quality education,” Garin Dau stated.

The atmosphere was charged with celebration and cautious optimism as community elders and youths gathered to witness what many described as a “historic moment.” For decades, residents have watched as surrounding towns developed, while their own children remained confined to a future limited by illiteracy.

Grassroots Parrot had also reported a similar outcry from Danshayi, a village in Rimin Gado Local Government Area, where no school has been built for generations.

Most strikingly, the report highlighted that not a single girl from Dan-Shayi had ever graduated from secondary school in the last 300 years—a sobering statistic that underscores the depth of educational marginalization in rural communities.

Despite government promises, construction in Danshayi is yet to begin, even though land has already been secured by the villagers.

As construction begins in Gishiri Wuya, all eyes are now on Danshayi and similar communities, with hopes that Governor Yusuf’s administration will continue its momentum to ensure every child in Kano State, regardless of location, has the right to learn.
